Tampa International Airport is reinforcing one of its most critical pieces of hurricane infrastructure with a new flood barrier system designed to protect the electrical equipment that keeps aircraft moving before, during and after major storms.

Why it matters: Airports are a cornerstone of disaster response and recovery. Keeping runways and airfield lighting operational allows emergency supplies, first responders and recovery crews to move into affected communities more quickly after a hurricane.

Construction is underway on infrastructure that will support a temporary 9-foot AquaFence around two electrical vaults that power the airport's airfield lighting system. The vaults are vulnerable to flooding during Category 3 or stronger hurricanes, and the new protection is designed to safeguard them through a Category 4 storm.

The $1.9 million project includes:

  • Foundations for the removable flood barrier.
  • Electrical upgrades.
  • Drainage improvements.
  • Pumps to keep storm surge away from critical infrastructure.

Airport officials said the flood barriers will remain in storage until needed and can be installed by a contracted emergency response team in eight to 12 hours before a hurricane's arrival.

Hardening facilities such as airports, power systems and transportation hubs helps communities recover faster following major hurricanes.

Nearby Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport said it has not needed similar barriers because the airport sits about 30 feet above mean sea level and relies on a drainage system that quickly moves water off the airfield into ponds and canals.
