An early morning house fire that spread from a vacation rental to a neighboring home in Weeki Wachee is highlighting how quickly residential fires can escalate and the importance of being prepared before an emergency.

**Why it matters:** House fires can spread within minutes, particularly in residential neighborhoods where homes are close together. Having smoke alarms, an evacuation plan and adequate insurance can reduce risks and speed recovery.

Hernando County Fire Rescue responded around **3 a.m. Monday** to the **7000 block of Coventry Court** after receiving reports of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home being used as an Airbnb heavily involved in flames, with the fire extending to a neighboring residence.

Crews quickly stopped the fire from spreading through the second home and brought the main fire under control in about **45 minutes**.

All occupants of the Airbnb escaped safely without injuries. The neighboring home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Airbnb said there was **no active reservation** at the property when the fire occurred.

**Resilience takeaway:**

- Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed.
- Develop and practice a family fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.
- Keep fire extinguishers accessible and know how to use them.
- Store important documents digitally or in a fire-resistant safe.
- Vacation rental owners should routinely inspect smoke detectors, emergency exits and fire safety equipment.

**Bottom line:** The Weeki Wachee fire serves as a reminder that fires can spread rapidly from one home to another. Quick evacuation and a fast fire department response prevented injuries, but preparedness remains the best defense against one of Florida's most common household disasters.
