# Flooding, torrential rain and dangerous lightning threaten Tampa Bay through the weekend

Residents across the Tampa Bay area should prepare for several days of unsettled weather as rounds of heavy rain, thunderstorms and dangerous lightning continue through the weekend and into next week.

**Why it matters:** Some neighborhoods could see rainfall rates of **up to 3 inches per hour**, with isolated totals of **5 to 8 inches**, increasing the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas.

**The latest:**

- Storms are expected to develop near the coast during the morning before pushing inland through the afternoon.
- Heavy rain, gusty winds, vivid lightning and localized flooding are the primary threats.
- More rounds of rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue into next week.

**Flood concerns increase:**  
Meteorologist **Jeff Berardelli** warned on socia media platform X (formerly Twitter) that "firehose" bands of tropical moisture could stall over the same communities for hours.

> "Heads up! A plume of tropical downpours streaming into North Pinellas and Hillsborough. Sometimes these Firehose bands can stall and heavy rain will train (like on train tracks) over the same area for hours. Watch for flash flooding! Rain rates 3" per hour. Palm Harbor, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater. NOAA says spots may get 5-8". Stay safe!"

**An unusually active weather pattern:**  
Berardelli also noted that more than **200,000 lightning strikes** were detected across Florida and the Southeast during the past 24 hours.

> "That's due to a very unusual summer pattern. You can see how the lightning streaks trace out the shape of the jet stream and the stalled front draped across the Gulf. This creates a volatile weather pattern from a mix of very warm tropical air and cool air aloft along the jet stream."

**Around Florida:**

- Storm chasers **Tony and Jesse of Haines City** photographed a waterspout near **Cedar Key** as active weather moved across the Gulf Coast.
- The **National Weather Service Tampa Bay** issued a Special Weather Statement Thursday morning for **Brooksville, Ridge Manor and Lacoochee** as strong storms moved through the area.
- The greatest storm coverage Thursday from late morning into early evening, with coastal showers expected each morning through the weekend before storms spread inland during the afternoon.

**Safety tips:**

- Never drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown.
- Slow down during heavy rain and leave extra stopping distance.
- Move indoors immediately when thunder is heard.
- Stay away from flooded ditches, canals and retention ponds.
- Monitor weather alerts throughout the day as storms may rapidly redevelop.

**What to expect:**

- **Thursday:** Widespread showers and thunderstorms from late morning through early evening.
- **Friday through Sunday:** Morning coastal storms followed by afternoon inland thunderstorms.
- **Next week:** Daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms remain likely across much of Florida.

**Bottom line:** Florida is entering one of its most active weather patterns of the summer. Torrential rainfall, dangerous lightning and localized flash flooding are all possible through the weekend, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same communities. Residents should closely monitor forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
