# Heavy rain returns to Tampa Bay today. Flooding remains possible into the weekend.

After several days of soaking rainfall, Tampa Bay faces another round of thunderstorms Friday as deep moisture remains parked over west-central Florida.

The **National Weather Service in Tampa Bay** has placed the region under a **Level 1 of 4, or marginal, risk for excessive rainfall** Friday. That means isolated flash flooding is possible, particularly where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Numerous to widespread showers and storms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening. The primary concerns are **torrential rainfall, frequent lightning and localized flooding**.

## What to expect today

Friday morning starts mainly dry, giving residents a window for commuting, outdoor work and other preparations.

Temperatures will climb from the 70s into the upper 80s and lower 90s before storms begin developing later in the day.

Unlike Thursday's more organized round of heavy storms, Friday's activity is expected to be more scattered. But any slow-moving thunderstorm can produce significant rainfall over a short period.

## Why flooding remains a concern

The resilience concern isn't necessarily how much rain falls across the entire region. It's **how quickly it falls and where**.

Recent rainfall has already saturated parts of Tampa Bay, meaning additional downpours can produce rapid ponding in urban areas, low-lying neighborhoods and places with poor drainage.

Flooded roads can also disrupt commutes, strand vehicles and make it harder for emergency crews to reach affected neighborhoods.

## Saturday brings another flood risk

Saturday should also begin mainly dry, with much of the region seeing sunshine through the morning and early afternoon.

Storms are expected to develop later, particularly near the **Interstate 75 corridor**, before drifting toward the Gulf Coast and potentially lingering into the evening.

The National Weather Service says a **marginal flooding risk could return Saturday** as deep moisture remains across the region.

## What you can do

Use the dry morning hours to prepare for changing conditions later in the day. Keep multiple ways to receive weather warnings, secure outdoor items and reconsider travel if heavy rainfall develops.

Most importantly, **never drive through a flooded roadway**. Water can be deeper than it appears, and flooding can hide washed-out pavement or other hazards.

If thunder is audible, move indoors. Lightning can strike well away from the heaviest rainfall.

### Bottom line

Tampa Bay isn't facing an all-day washout, but repeated afternoon storms combined with already-wet conditions mean **localized flooding can develop quickly**. Friday and Saturday carry the greatest concern before rain chances begin trending lower Sunday and into next week.
