The **National Weather Service office in Tampa Bay** issued a Heat Advisory from **noon through 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11**, with heat index values, what the temperature feels like when humidity is factored in, potentially reaching **109 degrees**.

The advisory includes Pinellas, Polk, coastal Hillsborough, coastal Manatee and coastal Sarasota counties, along with numerous other communities across west-central and southwest Florida.

### Why today's heat matters

Florida residents are accustomed to summer heat, but a Heat Advisory signals conditions that can become dangerous, particularly with prolonged outdoor exposure or strenuous activity.

High humidity makes it more difficult for the body to cool itself through sweating. That can increase the risk of **heat exhaustion and heat stroke**, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers and people without reliable access to air conditioning.

The National Weather Service warns that today's combination of heat and humidity could cause heat-related illnesses.

### Prepare for the hottest part of the day

Heat should be treated like any other weather hazard: **prepare before conditions become dangerous.**

Residents should drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, not only after becoming thirsty, and spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned spaces.

Anyone who must work or exercise outdoors should consider shifting strenuous activities to the early morning or evening, when temperatures are lower. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can also help the body stay cooler.

And don't forget to check on neighbors, relatives and friends, particularly those who live alone or may not have adequate air conditioning.

### Know the warning signs

Heat exhaustion can include **heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or fainting**. Someone experiencing symptoms should move to a cooler location and begin cooling down.

**Heat stroke is a medical emergency.** A very high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness or other severe symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Children and pets should **never be left inside a parked vehicle**, even briefly. Interior temperatures can become dangerous extremely quickly in Florida's summer sun.

### Heat preparedness is disaster preparedness

Tampa Bay's summer preparedness conversation often centers on hurricanes, flooding and severe thunderstorms, but extreme heat can also become a serious emergency.

Today's advisory is another reminder that disaster resilience means preparing for the hazards that happen between major storms, too.

**Before heading outside Tuesday, check the forecast, carry water, know where you can cool down and pay attention to what your body is telling you.**

With feels-like temperatures potentially approaching **109 degrees**, this is a day to take Florida's heat seriously.
