Florida's growing number of artificial intelligence data centers is raising new questions about the long-term resilience of the state's electric grid as communities face more frequent heat waves and increasing energy demand.

Why it matters: Data centers are among the most power-intensive facilities in the country, operating around the clock to support cloud computing and artificial intelligence. During periods of extreme heat, when air conditioning pushes electricity demand higher, they can place additional stress on local power systems.

A new analysis by the **North American Electric Reliability Corporation**, the nonprofit organization responsible for monitoring the reliability of North America's electric grid, warned utilities to better prepare for the rapid growth of large computing facilities, including artificial intelligence data centers and cryptocurrency operations.

Industry forecasts project data centers could account for **up to 12% of U.S. electricity demand by 2030**, up from roughly **4% today**.

According to Florida legislative analysis, a single **650-megawatt** data center could use as much electricity as approximately **500,000 homes**, highlighting why communities are evaluating long-term infrastructure needs before large facilities are built.

At the same time, Florida utilities continue expanding generation and transmission capacity while state leaders have approved new requirements intended to ensure large data centers pay for the infrastructure needed to serve them.
