Tampa Bay is settling back into its more familiar August weather pattern after an unusually wet stretch brought repeated rounds of heavy rain and localized flooding across the region last week.

**Why it matters:** While the risk of widespread flooding is easing, residents should still expect daily afternoon thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours, lightning and localized street flooding.

Meteorologists say an **easterly wind pattern** has returned, bringing drier mornings followed by showers and thunderstorms that develop inland around midday before drifting west toward the Gulf Coast during the afternoon.

Last week's weather was driven by a less typical **westerly flow**, which pushed multiple rounds of rain across the area earlier in the day and contributed to flooding in several communities.

**What to expect this week:**

- Dry conditions for most morning commutes.
- Storms developing around lunchtime across inland counties, including Polk, Hardee, Highlands and DeSoto.
- Showers and thunderstorms moving toward Tampa Bay and Gulf Coast communities during the mid- to late afternoon.

Forecasters expect many areas to receive **around an inch of rain** over the next several days, although isolated thunderstorms could produce significantly higher totals in a short period.

Temperatures will also return closer to seasonal averages, with overnight lows in the upper 70s and afternoon highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.

**Resilience takeaway:** Even with lower overall rain chances than last week, a single slow-moving thunderstorm can still produce flooded streets. Never drive through flooded roadways, allow extra travel time during the afternoon and monitor the forecast if you have outdoor plans.
